We Are The Unheard

Eve Horne

The intention behind We Are The Unheard podcast is to provide the platform for everybody who has ever felt unheard. Each week Eve Horne will be bringing you unapologetic, open-hearted, honest conversations and stories. Eve aims to educate the world with love, to change perspectives and to change lives. To bring people together through the power of audio so that they can understand the life journeys others have had, listen with empathy and be less judgmental. We underestimate the power of kindness and their ability to help others. If we all try to understand someone else's path or their journey or their experiences, we would learn so much more about ourselves along the way and become more compassionate and have more empathy. It is Eve's mission to help people get their stories heard and share their experiences so that we can all learn a little more and become better human beings. read less

Doesn't mean you're perfect. I'm not. But it means that I can just sit comfortable in this, in the, in the fact that I know that I did my best. Yeah. And I don't have to take on board other people's feedback. Yeah. If I want to and I want to improve in certain ways, that's up to me, but I don't have to take.   Anyone else's opinion of me. 025 I Reclaimed My Power with Michelle Grimes
In this episode Michelle talks about being reborn after having her confidence stripped,  being humiliated and losing herself all at the cost of trying to fulfil her dream career.  We discuss how even strong women can fall victim to the misogyny of the music industry and the moment she reclaimed her power!   “The misogynistic, the uncaring, revolting behaviour and words that were spoken to us for those two years, I, honest to God was broken. I was not myself. I couldn't sleep outside of panic attacks, literally spiralled into this depression.   I came home, like the most amazing thing I did was performed like 20,000 people in Trafalgar Square with the girls. And we had the best time, and we all said, like we had to call it. Everyone was like, it was getting to the point where it was ridiculous. I was such a positive, loving person all in my life, got to a stage where I couldn't even sleep, I couldn't talk, I couldn't laugh. I was just numb to the world. ”   ABOUT THE GUEST - MICHELLE GRIMES   Irish Pop singer and multi-instrumentalist Michelle Grimes arrived on the scene with a voice, panache and Pop / R’n’B sensibility that instantly set her apart from her musical peers. No stranger to the stage, Michelle has performed in Trafalgar Square to over 20,000 spectators as part of ‘Pride in London’, has sung for the King and Queen of Belgium as well as singing for The Taoiseach and the U.S Presidential party in June last year when they visited Ireland.    Hailing from Limerick, Grimes has emerged as one of the country’s most promising pop acts of recent memory. After the release of her first single ‘Going, Going, Gone’, Hotpress nominated Grimes alongside the likes of Dermot Kennedy and Denise Chaila for Irish artist of the year and one to watch. Michelle’s debut single wowed Irish radio and she went straight onto playlists across the country from Fm104, Live95, LMFM, Corks 96 and C103 as their Select Irish Artist of the Month as well as gracing the airwaves across BBC (Track of the week), 2FM, Spin and many more. Michelle smashed it at the overall International Radio Charts in Ireland landing on the Top 20 most played Artists on Irish radio alongside Ariana, Joel Corry, Dermot Kennedy, Dua Lipa and other stars. The track reached #3 in the breakers charts on Irish radio too.    CONNECT WITH MICHELLE:   https://www.instagram.com/michellegrimesofficial/ https://www.tiktok.com/@michellegrimesofficial https://twitter.com/MichelleGrimess   Name That Tune Song:   UNSTOPPABLE - Sia https://amzn.to/3wDtPMV   ABOUT THE HOST - EVE HORNE   Eve Horne is an Award Winning Singer, songwriter, producer, sound engineer, podcast producer and more recently, a creative transformational coach, Mentor and Advisor. In this episode Bravebirds Sarah Oakley and Lucy Burgess both talk about challenges they have faced and why in both cases they felt very much unheard. We discuss Sarah’s shock at having to become a carer for her husband and son and how she has dealt with it.  We also talk about Lucy’ insanely hard decision to take her son and leave her daughter behind and how they are now both able to speak out and be brave!   “And my situation's not different to anyone else's situation. We all have times where we need to find that courage for one reason or another because you have to find your way out. But yeah, sometimes we don't see that. It's not in public, it's in private, right. So that's why I think this podcast is so good “cause people say, ‘well, that actually happened to me’.    And it’s ‘cause I think often the other thing about hard times is you feel ashamed. You feel embarrassed. Like for me, I felt embarrassed that I wasn't coping with it. Like, I've got a background in kind of psychological coaching wellbeing, working with top companies, helping them improve their performance, right but in my personal home situation, I felt like I was failing, you know?”   ABOUT THE GUEST - SARAH & LUCY   Not all superheroes wear their pants on the outside.  Sarah Oakley and Lucy Burgess are on a mission to inspire every day she-ros to find their bravery through hard times.   CONNECT WITH BRAVEBIRD:   TO SHOP THE PANTS: https://www.bravebird.club   TO LISTEN TO THE BRAVE BIRD CLUB PODCAST: https://podfollow.com/bravebirdclub   OUR SOCIALS: https://www.instagram.com/bravebirdclub/ https://www.facebook.com/bravebirdclub/ https://www.twitter.com/bravebirdclub/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/sarahoakleyprofessional/   Name That Tune Songs:   I NEED A DOCTOR - Dr Dre https://amzn.to/3BJyZdz LA LA LA - Sam Smith  https://amzn.to/3zYyISL       ABOUT THE HOST - EVE HORNE   Eve Horne is an Award Winning Singer, songwriter, producer, sound engineer, podcast producer and more recently, a creative transformational coach, Mentor and Advisor. 023 Your Difference Is Your Strength with Solène Anglaret
In this episode Solène talks about her challenges she has overcome as a victim of bullying which led her to literally changing who she was at 8yrs old to fit in.  She talks about  making sure she didn’t get good grades so she wouldn’t stand out and why fairness is now one of her top values. We discuss our hypersensitivity and heightened emotionality that we have in common and the importance of realising that being different is a strength!   “It was very, very hard to feel heard and feel accepted because you are different at school. And being reminded of that every single day. And then you are different at home as well, and being reminded of that there, every single day.   And so it's not until later when you realise that that difference is a strength. That difference is the foundation of your unique story. And stories and perspectives, and that by owning that, and by celebrating that, and by being proud of it, this is when you can connect with people that, you know, are on kind of the same similar journeys that kind of gel with you.”   ABOUT THE GUEST - SOLENE ANGLARET   Born and raised in France, Solène is a global citizen who has lived in 6 countries and travelled to more than 50. 022 It's Time To Speak Up with Dorothy Carvello

022 It's Time To Speak Up with Dorothy Carvello
In this episode Dorothy talks about her book “Anything For A Hit” and the abuse she faced being the first female A&R executive as Atlantic Records. She tells me about her amazing Face The Music Now Foundation that she has set up to support women and artists that have suffered abuse in the industry and how she plans to take down the abusers that are still running this Music Industry!   “Yeah, the main purpose. And the reason why I wrote this book was because I have been unheard my whole life. And when you feel marginalised, strictly based on your gender and told that you know, you have a big mouth you don't like, you know, for just really sticking up for yourself and not wanting to take abuse.   That was the reason why I wrote the book and basically, being fired from every job in the music business for not engaging in illegal or inappropriate activity, for complaining about the way the men were treating me and other women and artists as well.”     ABOUT THE GUEST - DOROTHY CARVELLO   Dorothy Carvello began her career in 1987. She was the first female A&R executive at Atlantic Records, and one of the few in the room at RCA and Columbia. But before that, she was secretary to Ahmet Ertegun, Atlantic's infamous president, who signed acts like Aretha Franklin and Led Zeppelin, negotiated distribution deals with Mick Jagger, and added Neil Young to Crosby, Stills & Nash.   The stories she tells about the kingmakers of the music industry are outrageous, but it is her sinuous friendship with Ahmet that frames her narrative. He was notoriously abusive, sexually harassing Dorothy on a daily basis. Still, when he neared his end, sad and alone, Dorothy had no hatred toward him—only a strange kind of loyalty.   In her book Dorothy reveals how she flipped the script and showed Ertegun and every other man who tried to control her that a woman can be just as willing to do what it takes to get a hit. Featuring never-before-heard stories about artists like Michael Jackson, Madonna, Steven Tyler, Bon Jovi, INXS, Marc Anthony, Phil Collins, and many more, Dorothy’s book is a must-read for anyone who has ever wondered what it's really like to be a woman in a male-dominated industry.     CONNECT WITH DOROTHY:   Website: https://anythingforahitbook.com  Website: https://facethemusicnow.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/dcarvello/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/dorothycarvello     ABOUT THE HOST - EVE HORNE   Eve Horne is an Award Winning Singer, songwriter, producer, sound engineer, podcast producer and more recently, a creative transformational coach, Mentor and Advisor. 018 Music Took The Pain Away with Saskhia Menendez
In this episode, Saskhia talks about the struggle of being literally unheard growing up with two deaf parents. Having to adjust when her mum left home and then being put into the care system. She tells me about her decision to sacrifice her true identity for her children’s safe upbringing and how she is now living as her true self and being  an inspiration for other trans women in music!   “And I think, you know, the more people see things and the more people are educated and they see this representation that I talk about, then it changes perceptions of us as a community because we are stigmatised, we are laughed at, we are joked about, we are misunderstood and there's so many different variations now.   You have transvestites, you have transsexuals, you have all different types of non binary, and we're all different. Um, you know, I've actually had full surgery. I actually take hormones. I actually live like this full time.  Like, my passport’s changed, everything about my life is completely different type was before. So I think sometimes people don't know these things, you know, it's not their fault. They just haven't been educated in it.”   ABOUT THE GUEST - SASKHIA MENENDEZ   Saskhia has recently graduated from Tileyard Education, studying International Music Marketing which she has just graduated in with a Distinction.  She is extremely proactive with a strong passion for music creativity, music marketing, branding, artist development, community building, equality, diversity, and the wider creative industries. A self-starter that's highly resilient , and a lady that doesn't get discouraged easily, highly motivated with a great personality and positive can do attitude. 017 What The Hell Is PMDD? with Jenny Barling
In this episode Jenny talks about being laughed at by GP’s and remaining unheard by a professional from the age of 13 to the age of 38. How suffering with PMDD was hugely debilitating both physically and emotionally and nearly cost her her life.   “So if you said to a man, that you know, every month you are going to be in pain, you're going to not be able to concentrate at work. You might actually have to give up your job and you know, your relationships can break down and that's going to happen to you every month. Or, you know, when you're 50. You know, this is going to happen. That's gonna happen. There would have been research and everything done into this, like a zillion years ago, but the truth is half of the population are women. Yeah. So why are these conditions, Endometriosis, you know, fibroids, PMDD, PMT, Menopause, Peri-menopause, everything should be a huge part because this is people's lives you're playing with. You know, I do say that PMDD is life debilitating and I don't say that lightly because it really is.   And they say that only 5 to 7% of women suffer with PMDD and I think that is utter rubbish.”   ABOUT THE GUEST - JENNY BARLING   Jenny is a confidence coach who has the privilege of making women feel great about themselves, every day. She works on the basis that little tweaks to your mindset and life can empower you to live a life that you desire but most importantly, that you deserve. Jenny says, ‘The most attractive women in the world are confident women and I believe that every woman deserves to feel amazing in their own skin and mind’. She has helped hundreds of women find their inner confidence and feel amazing about themselves. 016 Let's Talk About PND with Rachel Walker Mason
In this episode Rachel talks about being her struggle with post natal depression and putting pressure on herself to pretend everything was fine. We discuss the societal pressures put on new mums to have it all together when in reality hormones and sleep deprivation make it almost impossible and how Rachel helps new mums with PND through her Lyrical Light workshops.   “I think there's something actually wrong.  I'm really, it's not just baby blues already think there's something wrong, because I just felt so ashamed, I thought, oh, it will go, it will be fine. And it took me a really long time and during that time I shot a TV show for sky, made an album, made a music video, which Laila was in, I was a little baby, you know, and did it, did a, a tour and all these kinds of things.   So people thought I was this incredible person having it all together, and I was just not, I was just an absolute wreck behind the themes and my family were almost like too worried to talk to me about it cause they, they could see that I was really fragile and putting on a front of “It's great. It's like, you know, everything's fine, I can pretend.” Yeah, so a lot of them, once I’d eventually talked about it, they said, “Yeah, we knew something was wrong, but we just didn't want to push, push you in case it pushed you away.”     ABOUT THE GUEST - RACHEL WALKER-MASON   Recipient of a prestigious British Citizen Award for contribution to the arts, named “a songwriting expert” by BBC Radio Four’s Today Programme and described as “one of the most talented songwriters in the industry” Rachel Walker Mason is a multi-award-winning musician currently writing songs with Grammy winners, Billboard Hot 100 artists, alumni from The Voice UK and American Idol, Emmy winners, Oscar nominees, MOBO Award nominees and Independent Country Music Association Awards winners.  Named a Woman Of The Year 2020, the only British musician to be inducted into the Indie Music Hall Of Fame, and hailed “an inspiration” by Prince Harry, Rachel is the only musician to have been crowned Freelancer Of The Year and to be given a Community Champion Award for her work creating the international arts festival Unlock Your Talent during the coronavirus pandemic which garnered worldwide acclaim for its support and fundraising for mental health. She is also the youngest person to be made a Fellow of the London College of Music by Professional Achievement.  A highly regarded songwriting and vocal judge, Rachel was a judge for NTA nominated Sing: Ultimate A Cappella on Sky One and is a judge for the UK Songwriting Contest, the World Choir Games and the Intercontinental Music Awards.   Name That Tune Songs: TITANIUM - SIA https://amzn.to/3hnwz9n   CONNECT WITH RACHEL:   www.rachelwalkermason.com www.lyricallight.co.uk www.listenincolourartistmanagement.co.uk       ABOUT THE HOST - EVE HORNE   Eve Horne is an Award Winning Singer, songwriter, producer, sound engineer, podcast producer and more recently, a creative transformational coach, Mentor and Advisor. In this episode Julie talks about being labelled a “problem” child, how our childhood experiences show up in our businesses as entrepreneurs, breaking the family poverty cycle and why it's important for her to have something other than just being a mum.   “I think growing up it wasn't just, I felt unheard. But it was like a two way thing. I didn't understand where, where my mum was coming from because she never spoke to us on an emotional level. So she had all this turmoil going on and she was like a brick wall. You know, she was putting on a happy face for us all, even though we could see what was happening, but we just didn't understand it. So we never had a conversation about their divorce. We never had a conversation about her cancer. And so. We could've coped with it a lot better. If we had a little bit more information to work with instead, we were just guessing all the time.”     ABOUT THE GUEST - JULIE CREFFIELD   Julie Creffield is a business growth strategist helping small business owners think bigger and perform better. 014 I'm Struggling Too with Helen Goad
In this episode Helen talks about how it feels to be “the other person” living with someone with long term anxiety. Being a hypnotherapist that deals with anxiety and yet not being able to fix them. She expresses how hard it is to try to help them with their problems but are unable to go to them with how “YOU” feel about their situation and the affect it is having on you.   “The unheard bit, it's, it's a hard one living with someone that suffers with them mental health, because they are really struggling. To try and keep everything together and to keep everything as calm and as normal as possible when you've got, at the time would have had a three and a four year old. Wow. And obviously, you know, toddlers… not always easy to try and keep quiet when dad’s having a really tough time. And, you know, they don't obviously understand exactly what's happening, what's going on at that kind of age. So it's that feeling of not being able to say I'm struggling too.”     ABOUT THE GUEST - HELEN GOAD   Helen set up her hypnotherapy business back in 2014 helping many clients across a wide remit. In this episode Nick talks about watching his mum struggle as a single parent of 5 children, how he struggled to find his identity in the Streets and in the Church and how as a Chaplain now he has been set free and is not tied to religion.   “This was my journey of freeing me up, letting go of the religion part and just being with people and I had some of the best conversations during this journey. Talking to people and whatever they need, I accommodate them. Like, what do you need? You need me to go get you, you know, they talk about buddha .   I'm like, you need me to go get that? Like, what do you want me to talk to the nurse for you? Do you know, all these things. So it's, it's a very eyeopening journey. And that's what really freed me. Coming to the truth for me gospel and what grace really was. Yeah.”   ABOUT THE GUEST - NICK PHELPS   Nick Phelps is an artist, songwriter, producer, production coach and chaplain. 012 It's Not You, It's Them with Dawn Jarvis
In this episode Dawn talks about planning her escape from the age of 6. Feeling unheard within her family and trying to figure out her identity as a young black girl in a white industrial town in the East Midlands.   “I did feel unheard and I did feel that people didn't understand where I was coming from. And I also think in my, in my family, it's sort of a very patriarchal family. I was the oldest girl and I had that brother and a sister in my family, sort of that my brother was valued more.   I felt very unheard and very lonely. And sort of like finding your way in your world in that sort of environment and living this “bi” life. I'm not biracial, but I feel like I lived a certain life, I talk about this, you know, when I do my speaking, I live this Jamaican little girl life at home and a sort of different life as a black, British girl life at school, which is quite confusing when you're trying to form your identity. ”     ABOUT THE GUEST - DAWN JARVIS   Dawn Jarvis, known as the “Diverse Nurse is the CEO of Dawn Jarvis Ltd. 011 Even Superheroes Need Self-Love with Emma Last
In this episode Emma talks about pushing herself to the limit of emotional burnout by constantly putting others before herself and the moment she realised it all had to change. She had to Reboot and introduce balance into her life!   “The real Unheard part was my mind was trying to tell me and actually I wasn't hearing it. I was numb to my own needs.   So that kind of emotional wellbeing, as much as people think wellbeing is a thing that, you know, we can affect and change and we can, and we can influence our wellbeing by doing lots of different things like being active, keep learning, you know, all sorts of different ways, mindfulness practice, et cetera, connecting with others. Those things we can do. But actually, if you don't deal with the emotional side of it and actually deal with your feelings, then it can lead on to, well, basically, burnout and feelings of numbness, anxiety and depression. That really, for me, was quite a huge shock because it just wasn't something that I'd really ever experienced before.”   ABOUT THE GUEST - EMMA LAST   Emma Last is the Founder of Progressive Minds and has over 20-years, experience in culture change, wellbeing, coaching and training. 008 Grief Has No Timeline with Ella Matheson

008 Grief Has No Timeline with Ella Matheson
In this powerful episode, Ella and I put the world to rights. We talk about grief and why it is so important that we shouldn’t be given a ”timeline” to grieve then “get on with it”. We discuss masculine and feminine energy, the importance of meditation for self-development. We delve into personal empowerment, spiritual and equilibrium.   “But I think for me, the biggest thing has been that in this world, that there isn't really a place to listen to something who is grieving. And that is a huge challenge for us, particularly after the last 18 months that we've, that we've had. And I think I would have loved to have had a space where I could just say, look, there's something wrong.   I don't think this is really right. And just, you know, having to keep on going through the motions, it felt really isolating and I think, yeah, trying to express that to people in my life at the time, there wasn't anyone that could really validate that this is actually a natural part of life. It's the circle    of life that everybody goes through that even if it was, you know, in that rational way, that would have been helpful.   So I think that's one of the areas that for me, being heard is so important, finding that place where. You can go when you feel perhaps broken or lost or confused and knowing that somebody that, that can really listen.”     ABOUT THE GUEST - ELLA MATHESON   Ella is Founder of Peace in the City and author of the upcoming book "The Art of Being - Ancient Wisdom for Modern Lives''.    She is a Compassion Consultant, Conscious Activist to establish a United Kingdom Ministry of Peace.
