In this episode Dawn talks about planning her escape from the age of 6. Feeling unheard within her family and trying to figure out her identity as a young black girl in a white industrial town in the East Midlands.
“I did feel unheard and I did feel that people didn't understand where I was coming from. And I also think in my, in my family, it's sort of a very patriarchal family. I was the oldest girl and I had that brother and a sister in my family, sort of that my brother was valued more.
I felt very unheard and very lonely. And sort of like finding your way in your world in that sort of environment and living this “bi” life. I'm not biracial, but I feel like I lived a certain life, I talk about this, you know, when I do my speaking, I live this Jamaican little girl life at home and a sort of different life as a black, British girl life at school, which is quite confusing when you're trying to form your identity. ”
